Hello world!

I suppose “Hello World!” is an appropriate title for the first entry into my “blog”. The “world”, at least the online one doesn’t know I exist, so here I am. I don’t think that’s such a bad thing, it just is what it is. To be honest, not out of any sense of appeasing my ego or anything, I hope to change that.

I find Facebook quite fascinating, I joined a month or so ago. I have met online, friends and colleagues that I haven’t seen or had contact with in years, how absolutely amazing is that! I have laughed and cried as the stories of family and friends and our daily lives have intertwined. In addition, due to a couple of online games that I have played I also seem to have had some “intriguing” friend requests that might have been a little more flattering when I was younger and single than now that I’m a father of four and on my second attempt at the marriage game! Speaking of online entertainment though, my “Mafia Empire” is growing quite nicely. I have a nice place in NYC, a beautiful seaside villa in my favourite country, Italy (other than the one I call home everyday, Canada…the best place to live in the world, other than the aforementioned Italy, but I digress) and a place in Vegas! In addition I have excellent credit at casinos all over the world. No need to search for $1 Blackjack tables like I do in Vegas (the real one), I’m playing with a bank account that I don’t pay egregious service charges on.

This past weekend, inspired by The Alberta Party Policy Convention in Red Deer, yes I joined Twitter. At last check, 41 Tweeters?? want to hear what I have to say, or at least are following what I’m saying. That is actually quite a cool thing. I tweeted Mayor Nenshi last night. With all the snow that has just fallen in Calgary, I’m sure he is busy directing plows, so the fact he didn’t get right back to me is fine. I tweeted the mayor, that is the underlying point.

This brings me to the point of why I think that this is such an incredible tool. While admittedly, Facebook and Twitter are quite amazing, they are limited in scope. Facebook allows you to write quite a bit, BUT it gets lost in the midst of my nieces and nephews humorous and sometimes bizzare “postings” which often include pictures which an Uncle probably shouldn’t see. Twitter is 140 characters. I’ve been a “texter” for quite awhile, but really, 140 characters? there is a conspiracy in there somewhere. So I noticed many of my fellow AP members “point” their tweets to their blogs. Done. I’m now starting a blog. I’ve been wanting to for quite awhile, I thought it would be complicated. It is not. The key point to all of this is that it is a tool that promotes and incredibly enhances our Democracy and our Freedom of Expression. What an incredible gift, BUT what an incredible responsibility. I have zero tolerance for hateful, bigoted vitriol, which is the “downside” of “freedom of expression”, but that is another day’s discussion. I won’t delve into that topic now.

I am the President & CEO of an emerging ALBERTA BASED Energy Company. I have been in the energy industry since I was 17. I have a degree in Biblical Studies. I have been a lifelong believer in democracy. I have been politically active for both the Conservatives and the Liberals, federally and provincially. I am a student of Politics, I can’t get enough of it. I love to read. I love to write. I write, or more accurately have written a significant amount of poetry, I probably will put much of it here. I am classically trained as an Opera singer. I have sung in innumerable concerts, performances, a dozen Comprimario roles for Calgary Opera, years in the chorus and I will sing O Holy Night again this Christmas at church, it was the first song I ever sang in public, couldn’t tell you how many times I have sang it since. I watch the “National” on CBC and the CTV National News religiously. I’m usually up at night so I also ensure to get a dose of the “Daily Show” as often as I can. I have travelled extensively. I plan to continue to do so!

I am a firm believer that the Renaissance came about 5-600 years too early for my liking and I intend to live it NOW! So therefore, I will write here about all of the things I’ve mentioned and many more I haven’t. I can hardly wait. Politics, the Arts, religion, science you will see it all. I hope that you, the reader find it interesting, sometimes challenging, humorous, you get it.

Finally, I am a proud and enthusiastic supporter and member of The Alberta Party, newly revitalized, re-energized and reorganized. My next entry will be about the past weekend. It will form much of the basis of my discussions here as I believe that it is critical to “get the word out” about this exciting political movement. That word, is “moderate”

Ok, I will post this now and send it out to “the world”.
